The Government of Yukon supports the vision for SMR development in Canada as laid out in the SMR Roadmap and action plan. Our government endorses the action plan statement of principles and sees the potential for SMRs to be a source of clean, safe, and affordable energy with economic benefits for Canada.

The Government of Yukon is committed to actions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, increase climate resilience and build a green economy. This commitment will require infrastructure investments to ensure that the Yukon’s electrical grid remains a low emission source of energy so that we can continue to build our economy while transitioning to clean heating and transportation alternatives and enhance our energy security.

The Government of Yukon is committed to work closely with Yukon First Nations and transboundary Indigenous groups to create economic opportunities for Indigenous people in the new green economy and reduce diesel fuel dependence in remote communities.

To these ends, the Government of Yukon is supportive of research and development into technologies that have the potential to provide clean, safe and affordable energy to meet the growing needs of our territory.

As a smaller jurisdiction, the Government of Yukon will look to play a partnership role within the implementation of the SMR action plan. The Government of Yukon will continue to monitor the progress of SMR technologies throughout Canada with the goal of identifying potential for applicability in our northern jurisdiction. The government will look for opportunities to collaborate with national, provincial and territorial research efforts in this area and offer the territory’s significant energy research expertise to assist in understanding the northern energy context and the potential for applicability of SMR technology in a northern setting.

The Government of Yukon is committed to a clean, sustainable energy future and has a keen interest in working with our federal, provincial and territorial partners to achieve this common goal.
