Current SMR-related research activities

UNB-CNER is a partner in the New Brunswick Small Modular Reactor Research and Development Cluster (NB SMR R&D Cluster), a collaborative partnership between the Province of NB, NB Power, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, and two SMR vendors (Moltex Energy and ARC Nuclear Canada Inc). UNB-CNER participation in the cluster involves:

University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE)

The university community plays an important part in Canada’s diverse nuclear sector. Universities carry out necessary education and training for developing nuclear professionals, and broader capacity-building through post-graduate education, and experience gained in research. University research itself is an important contribution, through a world-class array of facilities, led by highly regarded research leads and professors. Research addresses lower-TRL innovative studies and fundamental topics, complementing larger-scale research at national labs.

Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation

Overview

Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) is a leading developer of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and associated nuclear fuels. It was founded in 2011 by a team of highly specialized material scientists, physicists, and engineers. USNC’s Canadian operations are headquartered in Ottawa, and together with its corporate head office in Seattle, USA, and satellite offices in South Africa, Europe/UK and South Korea, USNC’s global team now numbers over 50 employees.

U-Battery Canada Limited

Overview

As the Canadian subsidiary of the global nuclear supply chain company Urenco, U-Battery Canada Limited is dedicated to the advancement of nuclear innovation through the development and deployment of SMRs. U-Battery’s advanced SMR aims to replace diesel power with clean, safe, and cost-effective energy for a variety of applications, including remote communities and other off-grid locations such as mining operations in northern regions.

Town of Deep River

Overview

The Town of Deep River is a diverse, vibrant and forward-thinking community of approximately 4,500 citizens, located in Renfrew County on the shores of the beautiful Ottawa River, a few kilometeres west of the Chalk River Laboratories - Canada’s premier nuclear science and innovation facility. Established in 1945 in parallel with the Chalk River Laboratories, location of the first nuclear reactors in Canada (Zeep, NRX, NRU), The Town of Deep River has been home to many of the brightest scientific minds in Canada – including four Nobel Laureates.
